UK imports of solid wood and lumber per month (January 2020 - January 2021)

The Federation explained that the double-digit increase in overall UK timber imports in January this year was due to a 26% increase in new housing construction in the UK during the fourth quarter of 2020 compared with the same period in 2019.

Founded in 1892, the British timber trade association is composed of hundreds of British timber importers, wholesalers, agents and producers. The Federation's companies account for 80% of the UK's timber market, which is worth 10 billion pounds.

David Hopkins, President of the Federation, said: "today, with fierce competition in the international market, timber supply continues to be tight, and housing construction projects in the UK have increased significantly. In this context, the latest data show that the overall UK timber import trade is growing, which shows that our business members are trying to match the market supply and demand.

"Behind the growth in import trade, the supporting factors include the rise in the UK real estate market, the government's willingness to invest more, and consumers' choice of spending on home furnishings, which consumers saved during the outbreak. Last year, the British saved a total of 160 billion pounds due to the epidemic
